Cronyism cause of Free State crises

The Free State Premier, Ace Magashule’s term as premier has plunged our province and municipalities from one crisis to the next due to his cronyist practises.

In a previous state of the province address, Premier Ace Magashule promised to replace poor performing municipal managers and mayors.

What he in fact meant was the he would merely redeploy cadres.

Metsimaholo and Tokologo Municipalities are two of the most recent examples of controversial appointments.

The appointment of Mr SM Molala as municipal manager of Metsimaholo that has been a source of recent political unrest, as well as the appointment of Stevens Kau as acting municipal manager in Tokologo are both very controversial.

Mr Molala was recently head of the Department of Police Roads, and Transport in the Free State. This department was plunged into controversy over tenders for various road construction and maintenance projects.

The Head of Department cannot be excluded from what has been coined the Free State “Roadsgate” Scandal. His removal from that department and subsequent redeployment in Metsimaholo is a legitimate reason for further dissatisfaction among residents in the municipality.

Mr Kau has been redeployed from Setsoto, to Maluti-a-Phofung and now to Tokologo Municipality.

In both previous municipalities, his appointment and performance was questionable.

Free State municipalities are some of the worst run in the country. These municipalities require skilled individuals to manage them out of their current crises.

The redeployment of controversial cadres will not improve service delivery to residents.
