The brutal slaying of a Daveyton taxi driver by police officers is one of the cruelest and outrageous things I have ever seen. I called Acting Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Major-General Gela immediately after viewing the video footage of the Daveyton taxi driver being handcuffed by police officers to the back of their police vehicle and dragged. I asked whether he had seen the footage to which he responded “No”. Gela then said “we don’t suspend for the sake of suspension” and that he “did not take instruction from me” when I conveyed to him my hope that the police officers involved would be suspended immediately. I cannot believe that the SAPS have not taken this matter seriously. There is clear evidence of wrongdoing on the part of SAPS members. The police officers involved must be suspended immediately, subsequent to the completion of the IPID investigation, must be charged and prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
The fact that it was police who were the vigilantes in this case shows that we cannot trust the SAPS to uphold the law. The fact that the crowd watched and did nothing to help, some even cheering, is a sad indictment of the state of our society. Acting Police Commissioner Gela must step up to the plate and do his job. Gela must further ensure that all police officers know that if they act outside the law they will not be protected by top cops.
