It is unacceptable that while the residents of Steynsrus have been without water for months the District municipality Fezile Dabi has an investment of R102 million and a further R73 million in the bank.
It emerged from a Free State Public Accounts Committee (PROPAC) meeting last week that the district municipality has this investment.
The District Municipality however did spend R6,5 million on an Aids Benefit Concert and paid the consultants nearly Million Rands- this while the residents battle to get water to drink.
The district municipalities are not investment banks and funds allocated to them are supposed to be used to develop infrastructure – in this case Steynsrus are sorely in need of a pump to pump water from the Vals River and the local municipality – Moqhaka – does not have the necessary funds.
The Moqhaka municipality should have applied for assistance.
Municipalities need to get its priorities in order – supplying water – a basic need – is more important than supporting an Aids Benefit Concert.
