DA Leader in the North West
The North West Standing Committee on Public Accounts (SCOPA) interrogated the MEC for Social Development, MEC Mosetsanagape Mokomele-Mothibi and senior departmental officials on allegations of officially procuring expensive accommodation in Bloemfontein during the ANC’s elective conference. The delegation was repeatedly requested by SCOPA members to fully disclose the whole truth about the allegations – however after fumbling by the MEC and officials on what exactly happened the SCOPA chairperson, Patrick Chauke (MPL) ruled that full documentation about the incident should be submitted to the committee by Monday 18th February and that the public hearing will continue on Tuesday 19th February. In addition Chauke ruled that the total expenditure (R174 093,40) must be paid back to Treasury before the next sitting date or those “involved will feel the full might of the law”. Indications are that MEC Mokomela-Mothibi, some officials and friends while attending the ANC Mangaung Conference stayed in luxury R5000 per person per day accommodation at tax payer’s expense. The DA welcomes the firm position of the NW SCOPA on this blatant abuse of power. The DA will put a question in the NW Provincial Legislature to determine which members of the NW Provincial Executive and government officials attended this conference at tax payer’s expense.
