SASSA officials turn away disabled man and elderly mother in Alberton

Mike Waters MP

DA Constituency Head and Shadow Minister of Social Development

I have today written to the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), Ms Virginia Petersen, with regards to the early closing of the re-registration centre at the Alberton City Hall.

Yesterday, at 15:30 a disabled man along with his pensionable mother went to the Alberton City Hall to re-register for their grants. On arrival they were told by the officials, who were sitting on a wall outside, that they close at 16:00 and they should return the following day.

It is unacceptable that officials who are paid to work until 16:00 turn away beneficiaries who are old and disabled; it smacks of insensitivity and a lack of work ethic.

I have asked Ms Petersen for an investigation into the matter and for her to report back to me. These officials need to be held to account for their unprofessional and callous actions. Nobody, particularly the elderly and disabled, should be treated as such.
