DA demands action against police rape of domestic violence victim

Patricia Mokgohlwa MPL

Spokesperson on Women

The DA in Gauteng is outraged at the report of the alleged rape of a woman wishing to report domestic violence by an unidentified number of police officers at the Wierdabrug police station in Centurion.

The police officers involved must be suspended immediately pending the outcome of the investigation as they are not fit to work with members of the public, and women in particular.

Spokesperson for substation confirmed the incident took place over the weekend and indicated that it is being investigated.

This is not enough. The allegations of rape are incredibly serious, not only because the perpetrators are those we are supposed to entrust with our safety, but also because the woman, in a desperate attempt to seek refuge from domestic violence, was further violated by police officials.

I will demand answers from Gauteng Community Safety MEC Faith Mazibuko, who must ensure that the officers face the full might of the law. The MEC must also indicate what support has been and will be given to the woman.

I am still awaiting a response from the MEC regarding the extent of rape by police officers in Gauteng.

We will never end the war against women’s bodies when the very police officers tasked to combat crime turn around and become criminals and rapists themselves.
