DA intervenes in Bedford school strike

Dacre Haddon MPL

DA Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature

The DA has intervened to put an end to an illegal strike by teachers in Bedford. The DA is deeply concerned about the illegal staff strike at the Templeton High School in Bedford.

For the last four months teachers have not been paid and there are nine temporary teachers awaiting payment. I have today, as the constituency MPL for the area, in consultation with colleague Edmund van Vuuren, spoken to the MEC of Education, Mandla Makupula, and asked him to intervene directly in the matter.

The MEC has been most accommodating and, armed with the contract details for the school, will be taking intervention with the principal to resolve this impasse.

While the Democratic Alliance understands and sympathises with the plight of the teachers and acknowledges their constitutional right to strike, this is a wild cat strike and we cannot condone this action while children are sitting at home and not in the classroom.
