DA welcomes MEC’s hard line against errant KZN councillors

The Democratic Alliance welcomes an announcement by KZN COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube, that Mayors and councillors in the province could be charged with misconduct if they fail to take action against civil servants found guilty of mismanagement of municipal finances.

The MEC has further cautioned that non-performance by senior municipal management will have a direct bearing on salary increase. The warning comes not a moment too soon. If the MEC is indeed serious about addressing financial maladministration then she must follow through and take immediate steps to have the Manase Report released. This must be the first step towards naming and shaming those individuals who have manipulated the system. KwaZulu-Natal municipalities are racked with fraud and corruption at every level. Of a total of 61 municipalities, only one, Umtshezi, received a clean audit form the Auditor-General in 2011/12.

This is a dismal performance. The time for drastic action is long overdue. The DA fully supports the MEC’s initiative – the buck must stop with Mayors and councillors.
