The DA in Gauteng wants Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy to urgently investigate allegations of sexual harassment at Pholoso Primary School in Alexandra. It is alleged that a security personnel at the school has been sending love letters to Grade 7 learners. These allegations have been reported to the principal to no avail. The principal has not taken any concrete action. A mother of one of the affected learners has opened a case at the Alexandra Police Station because her child feels uncomfortable going to school. With high rate of sexual abuse and violence cases in our country, urgent actions from the department are required to ensure that learners are safe when they are at school and protected from potential sexual predators. The department must also not wait for incidents to occur and then only engage in corrective and punitive action. The necessary preventative measures must be instituted by the department, including proper screening of personnel and awareness programmes at schools.
