Gauteng Health still owes suppliers

The Democratic Alliance notes the statement by the SA Medical Device Industry Association (SAMED) that member companies are still owed R156 million by the Gauteng Health Department. While this is significantly down from previous figures, it is still unacceptably high. The total owing is probably much higher, as money is also outstanding to medicine and other suppliers who are not SAMED members.

Health MEC Hope Papo must acknowledge that debts are higher than the one percent he claims is still outstanding.

Many debts are not paid because of poor administration. Companies complain that paper work is often lost.

Many suppliers are also not being paid within the 30 day legal requirement.

The Gauteng Health Department will have to work hard to regain the confidence of suppliers.
