DA KZN Spokesperson on Education
KZN’s Education department must be made to answer for a recent funding debacle, which left 90 school-going athletes stranded and unable to represent the province at a national schools event in the Free State.
School sport in KwaZulu-Natal is currently administered by both the Education and Sport and Recreation departments. It is in the division of this mandate that the problem exists. The current set up provides a perfect breeding ground for confusion with departmental officials who do not know where their responsibilities begin or end.
The DA has long advocated that school sport in the province be run by KZN’s Education Department and that the Sport and Recreation department be absorbed in order for this to happen. The DA will submit parliamentary questions to KZN Education MEC, Senzo Mchunu in a bid to establish the reasons for his department’s failure to provide funding for the trip or to communicate timeously with the parents of these young athletes. It is unacceptable that these young sportsmen and women should be let down so badly due to administrative bungling.
