DA Limpopo Legislature Caucus Leader
Reports that Premier Cassel Mathale is deliberately blocking the investigation by Department of Public Service and Administration into a number of heads of departments puts it beyond doubt that he must vacate the office.
At the next sitting of the Legislature, the Democratic Alliance will be tabling a motion of no confidence in the premiership of Mr. Cassel Mathale.
His continued stay as premier means he has the legal platform to block some of the investigations which could implicate him or his close political allies.
That there are investigations which have been delayed for four months because of Mathale’s refusal to sign documents that will see the start of disciplinary hearings is indicative of someone who has something to hide.
Hiding behind the veil of provincial competence should not sidestep the issue that Mathale presided over a very corrupt administration.
The impending investigations involve serious corruption cases revealed in the 2011 by the Auditor-General such as exorbitant inflation of tender prices and shoddy construction work on school projects.
In fact, Mr Mathale is so brazenly in support of corruption that he was prepared to spend over R100 000 of public money to attend the recent Cape Town Jazz festival.
The DA’s motion will be a litmus test for the ANC. If they are serious about dealing with corruption in the province they will support our motion.
