DA KZN Spokesperson on COGTA
The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes an assurance by provincial COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube, that councillors who fail to pay their rates and services bills risk losing their jobs.
The DA is satisfied with the MEC’s response. She appears to grasp of the seriousness of the problem in that she is willing to take a hard line. The departmental spokesperson’s comment – that councillors need to lead by example – is exactly what the DA has been saying. It is intolerable that those who have been elected to serve are themselves taking advantage of the system.
News that payments under dispute are currently being dealt with is also welcomed. The MEC cannot under any circumstances allow the outstanding figure to accumulate.
The DA calls on the MEC to ensure that this matter is dealt with swiftly. Apart from the fact that it is a violation of the code of conduct, KZN municipalities are in financial meltdown and can ill-afford to have councillors owing vast sums of money.
