The threatened resignations of senior doctors at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital will have dire consequences unless management changes course quickly.
Whilst there have been abuses, the sweeping cut in overtime pay and private work is unfair and will mean the loss of specialist expertise.
The hospital could lose its accreditation if there are too few specialists to train registrars.
Patients will suffer as operations will be cancelled or delayed if anaesthetists leave. Two anaesthetists have already resigned and six others will be giving their one month’s notice.
I urge the Gauteng Health Department to intervene to ensure that this hospital is not crippled by doctor resignations.
