Companies supplying the Gauteng Provincial Government have not received payments for three weeks because of a computer software meltdown. Callers to the Provincial Government Hotline at 011 355 2222 are told by recorded message that the SAP R/3 system for supplier payments and vendor queries is “unavailable until further notice”. I have been contacted by many companies desperate for payment but all they are told is that technicians are working on the problem. This is totally unacceptable as it is a legal requirement that suppliers are paid within 30 days.
This morning the owner of a small company told me that the bank was going to repossess her house because of the late payment. Gauteng has an appalling record in making payments despite Premier Nomvula Mokonyane’s many pledges that this will be fixed. There has to be accountability for this payment system collapse. Meanwhile, every effort must be made to restore payments to companies as soon as possible.
