Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) visited Diepsloot to assess the Muzomuhle Primary School feeding scheme. This follows several visits to the school over the past few months, during which we discovered that the learners have received little to no food. For many of the learners, their school meal is the only food they receive on any given day.
Following intervention from my colleague, DA Gauteng Education Spokesperson, Khume Ramulifho MPL, the scheme showed visible improvement. However, this appears to have been short-lived. After just a few weeks, the learners are once again faced with going hungry on a daily basis.
The school feeding scheme is contracted through the Provincial Education Department and has recently been renewed with a new supplier. According to the supplier, the department frequently defaults on payment and therefore they are unable to provide the learners with their daily meal.
It is clear that once again something has gone seriously wrong with this feeding scheme and once again the children are now suffering as a result. This is completely unacceptable and the department of Education needs to answer for the failure. I will be asking our Education Spokesperson to raise this with the MEC of Education in Gauteng as a matter of urgency.
