The DA in Gauteng welcomes the public consultations held by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB) on the proposed merger of the DA-led Midvaal Local Municipality with the Emfuleni Local Municipality to form a new metro in the Vaal area of Gauteng.
However, these consultations have not been sufficiently broad or inclusive, reaching and consulting only a limited number of people and communities affected by the proposed redetermination.
The DA in Gauteng calls on the MDB to schedule meetings in Midvaal itself and the Ekurhuleni metro as well. These communities have been excluded from the process. Residents and other interested parties in these areas also have a right to participate in a process that will affect them directly.
The MDB must also ignore emotional arguments fronted by the ANC at today’s meeting in Vereeniging. The MDB has an obligation to stick to the provisions of the Municipal Demarcation Act and must make decisions in terms of this act that is in the interest of local government and service delivery.
The MDB will have to prove its independence in the process and not pander to political influence by the ruling party.
