Theft at police stations further undermines public trust in police

Reports of items stolen from two police stations in the East Rand further undermine the credibility and public trust in Gauteng police. Thousands of rand in cash and cell phones were stolen from the Bedfordview station yesterday when robbers gained access to the exhibit room through the station commander’s window. This follows on the recent theft of a safe from the Alberton police station.

Gauteng police must ensure a thorough investigation into both incidents to determine whether incompetence, negligence or even cooperation with suspected robbers compromised the security of the stations and evidence. I will also submit questions to Gauteng Community Safety MEC about incidents of theft at police stations in recent years.

The inability of police to protect their own stations, supposed to be safe havens and a refuge from criminals, raises questions about police ability and desire to protect the people of Gauteng and their property.
