The planned closure of 20 public beds at the Bronkhorstspruit Netcare private hospital will leave a large gap in health provision in this area.
The present arrangement where this private hospital is contracted to treat public patients works well.
But the Gauteng Health Department has given notice that the 20 public beds will close at the end of June.
Local people are very upset because this is the only hospital between Pretoria and Witbank. It serves an area with about 100 000 people, including Ekangala and Zithobeni.
Without its public section the hospital will probably close, which will put 55 employees out of a job.
I urge the department to reconsider as this is a model public-private partnership that provides quality care to local residents.
