Willem Faber, MP DA NCOP Representative for the Northern Cape The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), through a motion without notice, has exposed the appalling abuse endured by 5 teachers in Kuruman, who have not been paid their salaries for the past 5 months by the Northern Cape Department of Education (NCDOE). This situation had already been reported in the local media, however it seems as though the NCDOE has continued to turn a blind eye on these teachers. The DA has already initiated action to help assist these teachers. Our Deputy Shadow Minister of Basic Education, Donald Smiles, has written to the MEC of Education, Griezelda Cjiekella, demanding she address this situation, and bring urgent attention to it. After the NCOP sitting, I had an opportunity to engage the National Education Department’s Director-General, Bobby Soobrayan, and brought this untenable situation to his attention. The DA would like to commend these teachers dedication. Even though they have not received salaries for up to 5 months, they still report for duty every day, and have prioritized the learners of the province over their own needs. Sadly though, the abuse endured by these teachers is compounded by the fact that some of them are only employed on a contract basis, and fear losing their jobs if they complain. It is our express view that MEC Cjiekella, has lost control of her Department. Why must this situation reach crises-point, with unions threatening disruptions, before she decides to act? We implore the MEC to urgently address this matter, and see to it that these teachers are paid.
