Desiree van der Walt MPL DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Health The DA has demanded that urgent measures be taken by Limpopo’s chief administrator Mr. Monde Tom to ensure that food supply to provincial hospitals is not stopped because suppliers are not paid. This comes after today’s report in the Sowetan that provincial hospitals have no meat supplies because some of the suppliers have not received payments for over two years. This is also compounded by the fact that this shortage also includes other much needed proteins such as fish, and dairy products. It is not acceptable that Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi and provincial MEC Dr. Mabaso still argue about whose duty it is to procure foodstuffs when it is the patients who suffer in the process. When 5 departments, including health were placed under administration in Limpopo, the DA wrote to Treasury Minister Pravin Gordhan to plead with him that service delivery must not be hampered in the process. Our call was clearly not heeded to. It is deeply insensitive for a hospitalised person to lack food because of some bureaucratic blunder. Our people in Limpopo also have a constitutionally guaranteed right of access to proper health care system. Through our oversight role we will make sure that this right is realised for everyone in the province.
