Leader of the DA in the Western Cape
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Western Cape is delighted with the victories scored by the DA-led City of Cape Town in the High Court today in their fight to halt SANRAL’s proposed toll roads on the N1 and the N2.
Not only did the City acquire an interdict against SANRAL to halt them from taking any steps in the implementation of the tolls, pending the outcome of the City’s review application, the Court also compelled SANRAL to provide documents which formed part of their decision making process.
The City will now access these documents in order to bring their pleadings to a close in the review application of the N1/N2 Winelands Highway Toll Project. This application challenges the lawfulness of the Project.
SANRAL’s proposed toll roads will affect all the residents of this province and especially the most vulnerable groups. The DA-led City of Cape Town’s victory is also a victory for constitutional democracy and for the Open Opportunity Society that the DA has established in the Western Cape. In this society all residents are able to access opportunities and have a right to access information that affects them.
As in the case with the interdict application, the Western Cape DA will support the City in its review application and will do our best to keep the people of this province informed on the true state of affairs.
