The death of a young man, allegedly after he was turned away from the Newcastle provincial hospital, requires urgent answers.
According to reports, the youth was rushed to Newcastle hospital after being stabbed. Staff allegedly refused to treat him, saying that he should go to another hospital some 16km away.
The Newcastle provincial hospital recently changed its mandate to a mother-and-child facility. This, however, does not absolve medical professionals from acting in the case of a life-threatening situation. It is the mandate of all health institutions to treat and stabilise emergency cases before they are transferred to the relevant hospital.
The DA is committed to ensuring that this tragic incident is comprehensively investigated and that the family of this young man get the answers they deserve.
