I am concerned by a report by the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) that food shortages continue at the George Mukhari Hospital in Garankuwa, north of Pretoria.
According to the TAC’s Andrew Mosale, kitchen staff at the hospital said that things were really bad.
Patients also complained about small food portions and a shortage of bread and maize meal.
The Gauteng Health Department, however, claims that there was no food shortage at the hospital.
I continue to get complaints about food shortages at hospitals in the Pretoria area because unpaid suppliers stopped delivery.
I have raised this directly with Health MEC Hope Papo, who said he would investigate.
Proper nutrition is essential for patients to recover from illness, and every effort should be made to ensure a balanced diet at hospitals.
