DA KZN Spokesperson on COGTA
The Democratic Alliance in Kwazulu-Natal calls on KZN COGTA MEC, Nomusa Dube, to urgently intervene within Mpofana in Mooi River as all indications point to a municipality on the verge of collapse.
Municipal workers returned to work yesterday – out of fear that they might lose their jobs – after being on strike for three weeks. They are claiming that the municipality failed to pay its contribution to their pension fund and that they are unable to do their jobs as they have not been given the tools of their trade.
The DA understands that the MEC conducted a fact-finding mission last week. She must now take steps to address the situation. It is unacceptable for her spokesman to simply say that the problems are similar to municipalities of its size and capacity. This must be dealt with.
Ten percent of KwaZulu-Natal’s municipalities are already under administration and Mpofana will soon be added to this growing list if something is not done quickly. The DA expects the MEC to act.
