The opening of the new Natalspruit Hospital in Vosloorus on the east rand has been further delayed, possibly to the end of September this year.
This was revealed yesterday by Gauteng Health MEC Hope Papo in response to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature.
According to Papo, only 1638 out of 121 951 items of new medical equipment had been delivered to the hospital.
The new hospital was built because the old Natalspruit Hospital is on unsafe dolomitic ground. Very little equipment from the old hospital will be used in the new hospital.
It is more than four years overdue as the original deadline was March 2009, but it has been plagued by delays and cost over-runs.
The total cost is now about R1.5 billion, which is nearly double what was initially planned.
It’s a sad story of incompetence and failed promises.
I hope that there are no further delays as the facilities at this hospital will be a vast improvement on the old hospital.
