Anthony Benadie MPL
Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga
The DA welcomes the harsh sentence handed down to the convicted killers of the late Ehlanzeni district Councillor and ANC Chief Whip Johan Ndlovu yesterday, but we echo the sentiments of the victim’s family that the involvement of powerful politicians in the murder must be investigated.
Yesterday the convicted killers, Bongani Mkasi and Mundi Khoza, were found guilty of murder, armed robbery with aggravating circumstances and possession of an illegal firearm, and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The DA is satisfied that the family of Cllr Ndlovu can now find closure after this heinous deed, but we are highly concerned over allegations by the accused’s legal representatives that Ndlovu was murdered on instructions from “powerful politicians.”
This is not the first instance where the involvement of powerful political figures have been alleged in the murder of a Mpumalanga politician, but the fact that it was placed on record, in open court gives much more credence to the rumour, and must be investigated.
The DA therefore calls on the SAPS to intensify and expand their investigations into the allegations, to arrest and question any person against whom these allegations have been made, no matter how senior or influential the politician may be.
We also call on the convicted criminals to fully cooperate with the police in their investigations, and name the person or persons whom they alleged in court paid them to murder Cllr Ndlovu.
The SAPS must continue investigating these cases – no matter how long it takes.
