The DA in Gauteng calls on MEC Lebogang Maile to beef up security at the MuseumAfrika in Newtown, Johannesburg following the theft of a collection of gems.

It is unthinkable that for the second time in one year precious gemstones have been stolen from this museum.

If criminals are able to swoop in on the museum twice in one year and steal extremely valuable gems then efforts to improve the security of this museum need to be put in place  immediately.

It must not happen that valuable and irreplaceable parts of our culture and history are so easily destroyed and taken away.

It is also very alarming that the City of Johannesburg  did not reveal details of the theft to the public sooner. It is in the public interest when extremely rare historical objects are stolen and we are no longer able to view these gems.
