The recent arrest of two KwaZulu-Natal traffic officials for issuing fake licences and accepting bribes, while welcomed, is proof again of the culture of corruption sweeping its way through our country.
This incident is by no means isolated – the issuing of such licences has become common practice. And every time a crooked official rubber stamps another bogus licence, the lives of more innocent road users are compromised.
As with any operation, the KZN department of Transport is made up of good and bad elements. But what it needs most is effective, hands-on management which means strict controls and a firm, proactive approach to stamping out such conduct by officials.
The department needs to send out a very clear message that crime does not pay and dismiss these officials without any benefits being paid out to them.
