Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga
The DA is shocked by media revelations today that MEGA’s new CEO, Adv Boyce Mkhize was found guilty of accepting an unlawful payment, and calls on Premier David Mabuza and economic development MEC Yvonne Phosa to immediately remove Adv Mkhize from office.
According to the report, the North Gauteng High Court ruled that Adv Mkhize had to pay back a R1,7 million “golden handshake” he received in 2011, which was paid to him in exchange for his resignation as a trustee of Liberty Medical Scheme. The court found that the agreement “subverted” the board’s obligations, and that Adv Mkhize “seemed blissfully unaware of his fiduciary obligations to the scheme and its beneficiaries”.
Given the high court ruling, and that Adv Mkhize is now at the helm of the Mpumalanga Economic Growth Agency which will be given astronomical amounts of money to drive the provincial bulk water delivery plan, the DA questions Adv Mkhize’s ability to deliver water to the people of Mpumalanga.
Furthermore, the DA believes that the high court ruling forcing Adv Mkhize to pay back money he received unlawfully, severely compromises his position as CEO of MEGA, and raises serious questions over whether he should be entrusted with millions upon millions of public funds.
To this end, we will write urgent letters to both premier Mabuza and MEC Phosa, calling for the immediate removal of Adv Mkhize, and the appointment of a suitably qualified individual who has the ability to not only improve Mpumalanga’s economic prospects, but also to be the driving force behind the bulk water delivery programme.
