DA to address Tshwane scholar transport problems as schools open

Khume Ramulifho MPL

DA Gauteng Education spokesperson

I will visit the Malusi informal settlements in Hercules, Tshwane tomorrow, 16 July, at 09:30 am to engage with parents whose children are battling to attend school because of  the lack of scholar transport.

Thereafter I will be visiting affected schools in the area to ensure there is a clear strategy to counter this problem.

It is important to engage with the parents whose children are struggling to go to school and  to determine the details of the problem so the necessary steps are taken to support the learners.

It is unacceptable that there are learners who have to walk more than 5km to and from schools in Gauteng. The Department should consider placing learners at schools nearest to their homes.

It is disappointing that district support staff are failing to attend to this issue.

I wrote to the Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy last week to highlight the problem and ascertain what the plan of action is to address this issue.
