Jacques Smalle MP

DA Limpopo Provincial Leader

The Department of Agriculture under the tenure of the new MEC, Rosina Semenya must assist all the farmers around Phalaborwa to vaccinate their animals to combat further outbreak of Foot and Mouth diseases (FMD) to other parts of the province.

The outbreak of the disease in Phalaborwa was confirmed by the National Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries yesterday.  This will definitely have a huge impact on our economy especially under farming and hunting industry.

The DA is of the view that not all the farmers can vaccinate their animals at this stage therefore it is of paramount importance for the department to ensure that it intervene with immediate effect.

The vaccination programme must be rolled out throughout the province to prevent further spread. The department must also arrange workshops that will make all the farmers to understand the importance of vaccination.

The DA urges the department to work closely with the national department to set up buffer zones around the area speedily to control the movement of animals in ensuring that the outbreak does not affect the export industry.
