Jabulani Hospital costs soar but no one held accountable

The cost of the Jabulani Hospital in Soweto has now reportedly soared to close to R1 billion, but no one has yet been held accountable for this.

The original tender in 2006 was for R336 million, but irregularities and contractual difficulties have pushed up the cost dramatically and delayed the opening for more than five years.

It’s outrageous that the bill for this hospital just gets higher and higher.

Gauteng Health Department chief financial officer Ndoda Biyela  cannot even give a definite date for the opening, saying that he hopes it will be by the end of October.

Enough with excuses! Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must tell us why no wasted money whatsoever has been recovered in this long-running fiasco.

There must be accountability in this matter, and a firm date for a proper opening in order to relieve the strain on the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
