Gauteng Community Safety MEC Nonhlanhla Mazibuko must request that the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) investigate the circumstances and events around Tuesday’s blue light accident in Braamfontein.

According to the Star this morning the black BMW which sped through a red traffic light and crashed in Braamfontein was registered to presidential bodyguard Maj-Gen Mzingaye Mxolisi Dladla of the police’s presidential protection service.

An internal police investigation is not enough given concerns about a possible political cover up, fuelled by Dladla’s close lnks to the President and allegations that the vehicle’s number plate was removed from the scene.

The IPID, in terms of its Act, must investigate any matter when requested by the MEC.

The MEC must demonstrate commitment to reigning in blue light bullies and ensuring accountability by referring this matter directly to an independent and impartial body like the IPID.
