Midvaal Merger – New Metro no foregone conclusion

Gauteng Local Government MEC Ntombi Mekgwe is casting doubt over the independence of the demarcation process in Gauteng currently under way. Reports suggest that she announced to communities in Emfuleni yesterday that a decision to merge the two municipalities will be taken by the end of July.

The proposed merger of Midvaal and Emfuleni municipalities is currently being considered by the Municipal Demarcation Board (MDB), an independent constitutional body.

By announcing to communities that a decision to merge the two municipalities will be taken by the end of July is presumptuous and casts doubt over the independence of the MDB.

The MDB has received various inputs – including from the DA, Midvaal Local Municipality and affected residents – which it has to consider and, based on these inputs, may even decide not to establish a new metro in the south of Gauteng.

There are various sound reasons being forwarded why the two municipalities should not be merged into a metro and these should weigh heavily on the minds of the MDB. It can therefore not be assumed as a foregone conclusion that a new metro will be established in the south of Gauteng.

The DA will be following the demarcation processes closely to ensure that all legal requirements have been met and that this will not be a mere politically motivated decision.
