Desiree van der Walt MPL
DA Limpopo Spokesperson on Local Government
The ANC take-over of Mogalakwena Municipality is an extremely concerning development. This came after an Exco meeting held last Thursday , where our DA councillor and member of Exco Beyers Smit was not invited, which effectively instructed municipal heads of departments to halt the issuing of tenders until the Municipal Manager William Kekana has been made to exit.
These HODs were told in no uncertain terms that they should take cue from the ANC. This fact was not denied by the mayor when approached by Mr. Smit.
The HODs were instructed further to halt any staff appointments, contractors or consultants.
Government duties and its provision of services cannot be jeopardised because the ruling party members in the Municipality want tenders to enrich themselves.
There must be a clear distinction between government and the ANC. Municipal officials are accountable to that sphere of government and not to the ANC. Their job descriptions are defined by the applicable laws as opposed to party’s instructions.
It is clear that the ANC has a political axe to grind with the Municipal Manager but that should not come at the expense of service delivery. There is even a special Exco and Council planned this coming Friday to discuss his exit notwithstanding the fact that his position is now sub judicare as the matter is now before the courts.
The DA will do everything in its powers to ensure that service delivery at this municipality is not stopped because of sheer greed.
We will be writing to Local Government MEC Mr. Clifford Motsepe to urge him to intervene and reverse these illegal decisions of Exco in Mogalakwena.
