Newtown evictions – corruption allegations must be probed

This morning I visited the Newtown Urban Village in inner city Johannesburg where the Red Ants were evicting people from 156 units.

About 2000 people have now been evicted from the 351 units in this complex which was opened 13 years ago with the involvement of the Norwegian government.

I saw distressing scenes of people with all their possessions on the pavement, many of whom will spend the night there in the winter cold.

While they have lost the battle in the courts, I heard disturbing allegations of high-level corruption concerning a R14 million loan, which they say led to the present situation.

The corruption allegations need to be probed as these evictions in mid-winter are very sad and not what anyone would want to see or experience.
