Police commissioner must reveal action on provincial Hawks boss

Anthony Benadie MPL

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega must reveal what actions are being taken against Mpumalanga Hawks boss Maj Gen Simon Mapyane, following the criminal charges brought against him.

In a letter to the DA on 16 July 2013, the National Commissioner acknowledges being aware of the allegations against Maj Gen Mapyane, and states that “the processes are being followed to deal with this matter in line with the SAPS prescripts”. However the Commissioner does not divulge what those processes entail.

The DA believes that the criminal charges and investigation under way against Maj Gen Mapyane warrants an internal SAPS investigation. Last week the DA called on Gen Phiyega to suspend Maj Gen Mapyane pending the outcome of such an internal investigation, and the conclusion of the criminal case where Mapyane stands accused of fraud charges.

It is unthinkable that a senior officer, mandated to fight fraud and corruption and now faces such charges, can be left to continue performing his duties.

Gen Phiyega needs to clarify her response and why Mapyane is being left to work and why she would not immediately suspend the officer.

Public confidence in the ability of the SAPS and the Hawks to fight fraud and corruption is directly dependent on the seriousness with which the SAPS deals with such cases within its own ranks. Commissioner Phiyega has an obligation towards the people of Mpumalanga to act decisively.

The DA will again write to the commissioner asking her for clarity and action in this regard.
