Suspend and investigate Mpumalanga Hawks chief

Anthony Benadie MPL

Provincial Leader – Mpumalanga

The DA calls on the national police commissioner, General Riah Phiyega to immediately suspend the commander of the of the Mpumalanga branch of the Hawks, Major General Simon Mapyane and launch an internal enquiry relating to fraud charges pressed against him.

Mapyane was arrested in May and charged with fraud, for allegedly submitting false travel claims, and his hearing is set to proceed in the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on 25 September. However, it is understood that Gen Mapyane has not been suspended and that no internal investigation has been launched into his alleged conduct.

According to Regulation 20 of the South African Police Service, falsifying documents and wilfully or negligently mismanaging finances of the state are classified as misconduct, and may warrant disciplinary action.

If the National Prosecuting Agency believes it has enough evidence to criminally prosecute Gen Mapyane, which it clearly does, there is no reason why the National Police Commissioner should not do the same.

In fact, the DA believes that to suspend and investigate fraud charges against the provincial commander of a unit whose core mandate is fighting fraud and corruption, would not only send the message that such misconduct would not be tolerated in any branch of the SAPS, but also restore much confidence in the public’s perception of senior police officials.

To this end the DA will write to Gen Phiyega, requesting Gen Mapyane’s immediate suspension pending the outcomes of an investigation, as well as liaise with our colleagues in Parliament to forward a similar request to national police minister Nathi Mthethwa.
