DA wants details of R500 million office revamp

Paul Willemburg MPL

Spokesperson on Infrastructure Development

The Gauteng Infrastructure Development Department plans on spending R500 million rand to revamp a Fox street office building in the Johannesburg CBD.

The building was bought for R40 million in 2005 and houses 570 staff members of the Community Safety Department, Gauteng Treasury and Finance Department and the Health Department. The Department expects the alterations to be completed by March 2015.

This is according to Infrastructure Development MEC Qedani Mahlangu’s written response to my questions in the Gauteng Legislature about the department’s contravention of health and safety guidelines.

The DA in Gauteng will request a breakdown of budget allocations as well as detailed explanations on the alterations, in particular as contract escalation costs could see the R500 million figure balloon, much like Jabulani Hospital.
