DA welcomes swift arrests of would-be poachers

The Democratic Alliance in KwaZulu-Natal welcomes reports that two would-be poachers have been arrested in a nature reserve north of the province before having the chance to kill any rhino.

The DA commends the swift and proactive efforts of these rangers.  This is exactly the kind of news our province needs.

The number of KZN rhino poached this year is a staggering 51. Nationally the picture is equally bleak with the figure, during what is only the eighth month of the year, fast approaching that of the entire 2012 period.

Clearly there is no sign of improvement and we are dealing with a chronic and extremely serious situation.

The DA calls on KZN Conservation officials to ensure that efforts to combat the poaching of all wildlife are bolstered and encouraged at every level.  This includes filling of all vacant posts and ensuring that funding is spent where it is needed.
