The Gauteng Economic Development department has lied about the completion of the Winterveldt Youth Enterprise Hub as the building is still not finished.
Winterveldt is an impoverished area north of Pretoria. I visited there yesterday together with DA Economic Affairs Spokesman Les Labuschagne MPL. We found workers still busy on the building, part of which does not yet have a roof (see photo below).
But on 23 May this year the department issued a press statement saying: “The Gauteng Department of Economic Development has completed the construction of the Township Enterprise Hub in Winterveldt in less than three months after the construction began.” (See full statement below).
This Hub is meant to be a business incubator creating jobs for young people in the automotive sector.
Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane launched it with great fanfare on 20 June last year in a ceremony that cost R1.25 million.
But not a single job has so far been created. It’s a cruel dashing of hopes for the vast number of unemployed young people.
It appears that the Winterveldt Hub building may be completed in September, but it won’t be operational for many more months.
