KZN Childline crisis: DA appeal to Social Development MEC to intervene

Makhosazana Mdlalose, MPP

DA KZN Spokesperson on Social Development

The DA will today write to KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi, requesting that she intervene following an announcement that the province’s Childline service will close its doors at the end of next month due to a funding crisis.

The DA is extremely distressed by this news.

Childline has helped thousands of children in KwaZulu-Natal when they have nowhere left to turn.  It would be an indictment against society if this facility had to close.

I will today write to the MEC and request that the department step in and look at ways in which it could help.  I will also submit a written parliamentary question to the MEC to determine whether Childline has ever applied for grant in aid funding and the outcome of any such application.

The DA is committed to doing everything possible to assist in keeping this invaluable organisation up and running.
