Violence at TUT Polokwane SRC Elections: Democracy threatened

Jacques Smalle MP

DA Limpopo Leader

Democratic Alliance Limpopo condemns the incidence of violence at the Tshwane University Technology, Polokwane Campus during yesterday’s SRC elections. The absence of enough visible security is the reason for this regrettable violence and lawlessness on campus.

Clearly by not ensuring enough security, the institution itself failed to take preventive measures to make sure that a peaceful and democratic atmosphere prevailed on this campus.  The violence was sparked by ANC aligned SASCO members who were burning DASO t-shirts.

The DA has already reported the matter to the police.

However as this is the season for SRC elections in tertiary institutions around the province, effective measures must be taken to prevent yesterday’s occurrence from happening again.

The Democratic Alliance leadership in Limpopo will set up a series of appointments with the governing structures of all tertiary institutions in the province. The aim of these meetings will be to discuss with them the need to scale up security during election times.

Our tertiary institutions are a breeding ground for our future leaders. Proper training on electioneering at this level will ensure the future survival of our democracy.

The DA will ensure that our candidates will, at all times, behave in a manner befitting to the calibre of future leaders we want for our country.
