Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must tell the people of Gauteng who is in charge of police in the province.
Provincial Police Commissioner Mzwandile Petros’s contract ended yesterday. National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega has only indicated that discussions with Petros has been concluded.
So, who is in charge of Gauteng police?
According to reports Petros will remain on until at least the end of the month. The question is will his contract be amended to a short term month to month one until the post is fillled? This will also result in unraveling of what little discipline there is.
The Premier must indicate whether the executive has been consulted and explain the delays in clarifying the future of this position. If the Premier and National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega are at loggerheads over Gauteng’s top cop we deserve to know.
Uncertainty surrounding Petros’s contract does not bode well for the fight against crime in Gauteng or the morale of the police service in the province.
