Did Gauteng Premier support alleged crooked top cop appointment?

Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane must explain to the people of Gauteng why she backed the controversial appointment of Mondli Zuma as provincial police commissioner.

Zuma was appointed on Saturday and sacked a few hours later after I raised alarm bells over a raft of criminal charges pending against him.

I will ask the Premier about her role in the appointment when she next appears before the Gauteng Provincial Legislature to answer questions.

In terms of s207(3) of the Constitution, the National Police Commissioner appoints the Provincial Police Commissioner in concurrence with the provincial executive.

Either the Premier approved the appointment without doing her own homework, or she was not consulted as required by the Constitution. Both scenarios are deeply concerning, and the Premier owes us an explanation.

Should this prove true the Premier failed to protect the interests and the safety and security of Gauteng and its people, a serious charge against the first citizen of the province.
