Gauteng home to biggest RDP title deed backlog

Gauteng has the single largest backlog in issuing title deeds for RDP houses in South Africa, representing almost a quarter of the national backlog.

This was revealed in a reply to a question posed by the DA in Parliament, which indicated that the backlog for the province was at an estimated 220 000 three years ago. Approximately 40% of people living in RDP homes across the province do not have the title deeds to prove ownership. This is likely to be much higher now.

Failure by the Gauteng Human Settlements Department to issue title deeds leaves RDP homeowners with no protection of their property rights.

The DA will continue to pressure the provincial government to issue the title deeds as part of our “Land to the People” campaign for best use to be made of state-owned land in Gauteng.

The Western Cape’s Title Deed Programme is the only one in the country that provides a solution in reducing the backlog.

Issuing title deeds will also be a priority for the DA government in Gauteng, and will be driven from the Premier’s Office to ensure that the benefits of property ownership are spread as widely as possible.
