The Democratic Alliance yesterday laid hate speech charges (click here) against the Circuit Manager of Vhembe Education District, Dr. Phaswana. This charge was laid at the Musina Equality Court.
Dr. Phaswana’s utterances which were recorded by one of the learners have no place in our schools. He can be heard promoting racial discord, and violence when he was addressing Grade 12s. His choice of words during his address are not befitting for an address meant for our learners.
We are also following up these court proceedings, by formally reporting this matter to the Education MEC, Ms. Dikeledi Magadzi. We believe that the provincial Department of Education must also initiate a parallel probe into this matter.
The DA is committed to fighting against any form of racial bigotry. It is of fundamental importance that we erase racism in all its manifestations, especially in our schools which are essential institutions of socialisation, where the character of future our leaders is nurtured.
