Least surprised by last week’s KwaZulu-Natal crime stats –which reveal that serious and violent crime is up – will be the many ordinary citizens who live each day in fear for their own safety and that of their families.
The stats show that murders, attempted murders and robberies with aggravated circumstances have increased. This is in line with national figures for the same categories which are at their worst in ten years.
The figures should be a wake-up call for the province’s top brass.
The DA has, for several years, been calling for a comprehensive and independent skills review of KwaZulu-Natal’s police stations. We are committed to ensuring that this takes place and will continue to pressure for such an audit.
The people of KwaZulu-Natal deserve a police force that is motivated, capacitated and properly skilled.
