Limpopo municipalities gearing up to waste millions on expo trip

The DA has learnt that Limpopo municipalities are gearing up to blow millions on sending delegates to a tourism expo in Zimbabwe.

Information in DA’s possession is that municipalities such as Mutale Municipality will be sending eight delegates at an estimated budget R300 000.  These officials are the Executive Mayor, Portfolio Head, the Municipal Manager, the Tourism Officer, the SMME Officer and the Media Liaison Officer.

Makhado Municipality also has a similar item for discussion on its agenda.

Conservatively estimated, if all municipalities in Limpopo will also be sending delegates, this will run into tens of millions of rands.

The DA will use our standing in each of these municipalities to object to this extravagant waste of taxpayer’s money for the expo scheduled to be held on 10, 11 and 12 of October 2013.

Limpopo faces a water crisis because municipalities are struggling to provide basics like taps and pipelines to poor communities.

Our municipalities are already cash strapped and their budgets must be prioritised for service delivery concerns.

The provincial government should send a single delegation to this expo if necessary and save tens of millions of rands.
